CITES Manta Ray Reception

Last night Freeland and WildAID hosted a reception to advocate for the acceptance of the proposal to list manta rays on CITES Appendix II.  A life size oceanic manta was the centerpiece of the event.

A government official representing the Thai tourism ministry addressed the attendees and invited all of us to stay in Thailand after the CITES meeting to dive with the manta rays.

Guy Stephens and Andrea Marshall
Manta ray researchers Guy Stevens and Andrea Marshall made their case for a CITES listing.  Andrea said that her study site in Mozambique has lost 87% of its mantas in only a few years due to a small artisinal fishery.

Miss Scuba International emceed the event and mingled in the crowd afterwards to speak with the country delegates and conservation organizations in attendance.
